What is Malayalam?
Malayalam is a language in the Dravidian family of languages. It is spoken by about 45 million people across India and abroad. It is the official language of Kerala and also one of 22 scheduled languages. Malayalam belongs to the southern branch of the Dravidian languages and is a sister language of Tamil. However, it has a more significant influence from Sanskrit than Tamil.
As with all Indian languages, Malayalam has many regional dialects. These vary widely in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Several linguistic factors like geography, society, culture and caste have influenced the development of Malayalam over time. Malayalam has a large number of lexical borrowings from other languages including Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Persian and Portuguese.
Malayalam also has a unique alphabet for denoting the rhotic sound ‘r’ which is absent in other Indian languages. In addition, Malayalam has 15 vowels and 42 consonants.
