Who You’re Really Marketing To

Every once in a while, I come across a random article that really shines a light on people in general.

As marketers and business owners, we design products for people.  We try to solve a problem.  We identify a need, fix it and then sell it.

And to do that, we put together marketing material and messages that we *think* customers to relate to and they’ll buy from us.

All of the conventional training, business courses and marketing books tell you to define your customer avatar and then market directly to that person.

Here’s a sobering article from Buzzfeed titled, “28 People Who Are Too Dumb For Their Own Good.”

The next time you have a ‘killer product’ or a piece of incredible copy, be sure that it’s targeting the exact type of person you’re looking for.  And if you have to dumb it down a little, that’s ok too.
